It wasn't that long ago that if you where looking for a home to purchase you only had one way of working with a real estate agent. This involved having an agent (Seller’s agent) show you homes on behalf of the Seller of those homes (Seller agency). As a Buyer/Customer you where not represented by anyone other than yourself. Negotiation over price and terms where entirely your responsibility.
In many areas accros the United States, "Buyer Agency*" may be employed in a home purchase. It is not mandatory, however, that you choose this form of representation...you may still continue to be shown homes by an agent who is representing the Seller (or the Seller directly with a For Sale by Owner/FSBO) and therefor negotiate on your own behalf.

There are some exception to this (such as some For Sale By Owners, etc.) which will be explained to you in detail.
